Building a Greener Future: Showcasing Real Homes and Our Retrofit Projects

Each project is unique, and our case studies showcase a variety of retrofitting journeys, from enhancing period homes to modernising family houses to support the NetZeroCities goal of achieving carbon neutrality in Galway.

1970’s Semi-Detached House in Westside

This case study explores the potential for retrofitting a typical 1970s terraced house located in Rahoon, analyzing its current energy performance, identifying areas for improvement, and evaluating

Location:

Westside

Home Type:

Semi-detached house built in 1978

Tenants:

Pensioner

Retrofit Project Goals:

The goal for this retrofit was to improve home comfort whilst reducing energy bills. Dave also wanted to consciously contribute to local sustainability initiatives to help reduce carbon emissions.

Retrofit Project Summary:

Dave found that his semi-detached home was often feeling cold and damp, resulting in costly energy bills.

Previous measures, such as double glazing (in 2001) and improved attic insulation (in 2005) had been implemented in the house to increase energy efficiency.

However, after an initial assessment, we identified that solar panels were the next step in further improving the efficiency and sustainability of Dave’s home.

The main factors affecting his comfort, energy bills, and BER rating were his windows and doors, along with the age of the building fabric.

The approximate cost of the home energy upgrade was €7,000, and we helped the homeowner access €2,100 in grants and funding to support the retrofit.

Retrofit Enhancements:

  • PV Solar Panels

Home Energy Upgrade Results:

  • The retrofit has reduced Dave’s energy bills by up to 40%
  • The home energy upgrade has substantially reduced C02 emissions from Dave’s home. It is estimated that 1.14 tonnes of carbon emissions are being saved
  • Access to €2100 in grants and funding for the home energy upgrade
  • The initial BER Rating of D2 has now been improved to C2

What Homeowner Say

Hear from those who know. Uncover the secrets of happy homeowners.

Dave, Westside

Sandra and Kieran were very helpful in providing detailed information on the options of energy upgrades, and the cost and grants available to me.

This is an ongoing conversation, and their expertise is critical in providing me with the knowledge to make choices to reduce my carbon footprint while also benefiting my home comfort.

The solar panels are reducing my bills and this is a great incentive to continue with further measures to increase my home comfort and have a positive environmental impact

The Warm Home Hub provides me, and our community, with an invaluable resource to tap into, for helping us negotiate the measures we can take to make our homes and our community a warmer and more healthy environment.”.
